Postdoctoral position in experimental Heavy-Ion Physics offered at the Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology for activity in the STAR experiment at RHIC

The Heavy Ion Collision Group at the Faculty of Physics at Warsaw University of Technology participates in the the experiments STAR at BNL, ALICE and NA61/SHINE at CERN HADES at GSI, CBM at FAIR.

The STAR group specializes in measurements of two-particle femtoscopic correlations analysis. We closely cooperate with the HADES, CBM, and ALICE groups at WUT.

The successful candidate will work with Professor Hanna Zbroszczyk on the STAR experiment at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, focusing on studies of two-particle correlations in the frame of the Beam Energy Scan progam. Responsibilities include data analysis and publication of results, collaboration service work, mentoring students, and support of the Heavy Ion Reaction Group's research activities. Occasional travel to BNL will be required. The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in studies of femtoscopic correlations in the STAR experiment searching for bound states. The successful candidate will be employed as a research assistant professor at the Faculty of Physics at WUT, within the project "Studies of interactions of strange particles in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the STAR experiment at RHIC", funded by WUT ID-UB, for an initial period of 12 months. The contract can be extended up to 24 months, provided the satisfactory outcome of the evaluation after the first 12 months.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Taking part in the analysis of Au + Au data at RHIC recorded by the STAR detector in order to study strong interactions and search for bound states
  • Joining the STAR collaboration and the Physics Working Group - Correlations and Fluctuations (CF PWG), participating in weekly deliberations and active participation in its meetings (at least every few weeks),
  • Taking part in the "Service Work" required by STAR Collaboration, e.g. when collecting data
  • Working closely with the ALICE Correlations (Femtoscopy) group to learn more about the strong interactions
  • Presentation of results at meetings, conferences, as well as writing scientific articles and publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • Maintaining close cooperation with colleagues in the CF PWG group, which will be essential for the progress of all stages of the project

Candidate requirements (and skills):

  • Ph.D. in Physical Sciences
  • Experience in experiments in the field of nuclear physics and elementary particles of high or intermediate energy
  • Knowledge of experimental techniques and measurements in the field of nuclear / high energy physics
  • Experience in the field of physics of "soft" processes
  • Knowledge of experimental measurements with the use of particle correlation techniques
  • Knowledge of MC generators and detector simulations

Additional information:

  • Domestic and international travels
  • The position is currently for a year and may be renewed for another year depending on performance.
  • Employment status

It is a full-time, 100% research position with no teaching obligations. However, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to supervise B.Sc. and M.Sc (and partially Ph.D.) students and teach selected classes.

Salary: according to max. rate allowed in the WUT ID-UB competition.

How to apply

Applications and any questions should be sent to:

Hanna Zbroszczyk (hanna.zbroszczyk@pw.edu.pl)

Applications must include

  • a CV of a candidate,
  • a list of talks and up to 5 most important publications (indicating the contribution of a candidate to those publications),
  • a brief statement of research interests,
  • Three letters of reference, to be sent by referees directly to hanna.zbroszczyk@pw.edu.pl.

A candidate must have received a Ph.D. in experimental particle or nuclear physics within the last seven years to qualify.

Selection process

The final choice of candidates will be made on a competitive basis, based on assessing research achievements, scientific skills, and an interview with the best candidates.

This position will be open until filled. To receive full consideration, applications should be submitted by August 31, 2021.
