Physics of Complex Systems Division

WUT Base of knowledge

Complex systems very often occur in nature and technology, they can also be formally defined systems. Their most important common property is - regardless of their nature - the validity of certain universal physical laws. The physics of complex systems deals with mathematical description and the formulation of such laws. The main feature of complex systems is the non-linearity of their dynamic properties. For this reason, a detailed mathematical description of complex systems is very difficult - it is based mainly on the use of non-linear dynamics, probabilistic methods and statistical physics. An equally important theoretical method for researching complex systems is the computer simulation method.

The main directions of research on complex systems in the Physics of Complex Systems Division are based on these methods and are as follows:

  • studies of dynamic processes in complex networks - social, economic and technical. These include, in particular, epidemic modeling, public opinion formation, internet and energy network research
  • non-linear analysis of the heart rhythm and cardiovascular properties, especially related to the description of cardiological pathologies and the development of diagnostic methods The research is conducted in cooperation with domestic and foreign scientific medical centers
  • studies of nonlinear dynamic phenomena in magnetic systems, mainly related to stochastic resonance and spin wave resonance
  • studies of neural networks in the field of non-linear dynamics and applications in security systems
  • theory and application of cellular automata
