The European Synchrotron – ESRF is the first in the world 4th generation synchrotron, based in Grenoble, France. The ESRF is a world recognized large-scale international facility supported by 22  countries with more than 30 research beamlines clustered into six groups. Each year it hosts thousands of scientists from all over the world working both in academia and industry. The scientific focus of ESRF stretches across multiple fields of science, i.e., biology, chemistry, physics, and cultural heritage. The most recent Extremely Brillant Source upgrade (EBS) project brought exciting opportunities to its user community by implementing the novel hybrid multi-bend achromat (HMBA) lattice, reducing the beam's horizontal emittance and increasing brilliance and the coherent flux of generated photons by a 100 times factor.

In this contribution, the synchrotron experimental techniques used to characterize soft and hard condensed matter will be introduced and illustrated by recent scientific examples. Moreover, the impact of the EBS upgrade on the experimental capabilities of some ESRF beamlines will be explained. In the end, an introduction to the user program will be given, emphasizing the application procedure for the beamtime and different types of proposals.
